The Classic returns for its sixth
year in Coronado. In the spirit of the famed Monterey weekend, the Speed
Festival will treat the San Diego area to an historic automotive weekend
at the North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado.
Staged on the runways and taxiways with Navy aircraft and ships in
the background, the Speed Festival will feature over 200 of the world's
top racing machines on a spectator-friendly 1.6 mile course. Under the
direction of HMSA and patterned after the world-renowned Monterey
Historic Automobile Races, the Classic will feature some of the world's
premier race cars from pre-World War II sports and racing cars to
historic Trans-Ams. Marques such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, Ferrari,
Lotus, Porsche, Shelby along with some fine Detroit iron will take to
the track.
There will be a variety of food, soft drinks and beer at the track,
food sales benefit Navy charities.
Volunteers needed!
If you'd like to help coordinate group ticket sales, plan an event
around the races such as a small "regional" breakfast/caravan
to the Speed Festival on Saturday or Sunday, please reply.
Something Different:
The Concours d' Elegance will be held again at the Speed
Festival--with a new twist: this time called the "Classic Car
Collection" which opens it up to a wider variety of automobiles. On
Saturday judges will tour the Car Club Corral and select five cars to be
displayed in the Classic Car Collection tent on Sunday.
October 9
The Shelby Club will host their traditional "Parade of
Classics" from the San Diego Auto Museum through the city, across
the bridge to Coronado to the Bay Beach Cafe for dinner (special
discount pricing and reserved parking provided). Only 50 cars accepted,
so if you have a pre-1973 classic and would like to have a great time
call parade director Craig Wright at 858-674-2444.
October 11-12
Car Corral at the Speed Festival
I need a tally of how many people are interested in parking in the
Car Club Corral. If you are planning on attending the Speed
Festival--please let me know before September 1. ONLY Car Club vehicles
will be allowed to park in the corral, OTMs will be asked to park in the
free general parking area.
(As usual, closer to the event I'll ask for you
to send me a self addressed, stamped envelope so that I can mail the
pass for the Corral to you.)
