Time: All Day (both days)
Place: Flyin’ J Truck Stop Frazier Park
Host: Dean Rudenauer
Description:
So, you say that you like twists and turns for your Miata,
right? Well, here’s your chance to prove it. Come and join us for the third
installment of “A Twisted Weekend” on some of the curviest roads around. This
run is for those Miataphiles with truly adventurous spirits, whose appetite for
endless twisting roads is never sated. Don’t believe me? Just ask our members
that traveled on the previous versions of this run! We will certainly keep our
speeds to a tolerable level of course, so that both drivers and navigators can
enjoy the scenery as well as the turns. I guarantee this will be one of the
most exciting weekend drives you will find! A word of caution though, the
driver’s arms may get a little tired by the end of the run!
We will leave the start at approximately 9:00 am on Saturday and travel north on scenic mountain roads and then through the twisting sections of Highway 33 to highway 150, on our way to lunch at Ojai.
In the afternoon, We’ll travel through the mountains of Santa Barbara on the obscure East Camino Cielo and then drop into the canyons of Cold Creek to see an ancient stage coach stop. Afterward, we’ll follow more twisty roads on our way to Jalama Beach, before ending the day at our hotel in Lompoc.
Dinner that evening is at La Paloma, across from the hotel. It’s a new restaurant scheduled to open next month, another adventure in the making. After dinner, those who want more great roads for dessert may accompany us on a loop around Vandenberg to enjoy the numerous stars in the early summer sky or you may relax and socialize at the hotel instead.
We’ll have another exciting day of driving on Sunday, starting with a trek up various roads in San Luis Obispo county that end in “Canyon”, followed by a run over Highway 58, to, you guessed it, our ultimate destination, the famous racetrack, Button Willow raceway. There we will have an opportunity to take a few laps around that famed track, a fitting end to a weekend of twists, turns, and incredible sights.
Our weekend will end in Button Willow at about 3:00 pm. The total mileage covered on this weekend is long, at approximately 450 miles from beginning to end, but will include plenty of rest stops along the way.
For those that make the entire journey, we will have pins and window stickers for you, which will inform everyone that, “I survived Twisted Weekend III”. If you are extremely lucky, perhaps you will pull out the lucky “Yellow Button” which will entitle you to free accommodations on our next Twisted Weekend event. Just ask Debby Kepart, our winner from 2004!
I hope to see you all there.
Accommodations:
Quality Inn and Executive Suites, Lompoc - You may make reservations for Saturday evening by calling 805-735-8555 and asking for a room in the SOCALM section of reserved rooms. We have reserved 25 rooms for this event. So, make you reservations now! You do not want to miss this run! Group rate price - $79.99, plus tax.
Jalama Beach Campground - You may pitch a tent for the evening at the Jalama Beach campground, for $18.00 ($16.00 if you’re a senior). There are restrooms, water, and showers at the campground. For further information on the campsites, please contact the Jalama Beach Office between 9:00 and 5:00 at 805-736-3504. However, I am doubtful about anyone getting a spot, because the campground is first come, first serve (at least presently, there is some debate about changing it to reservations only). June is one of the busier months at Jalama.
Breakfast on Sunday – The hotel offers a continental breakfast, or you may choose from one of the local restaurants.
Directions to Start:
Find your way to the I-5 north and pass Gorman. The next exit is Frasier
Mountain.
At the stop sign, turn left and cross under the freeway. Pass through the next
stop sign and you will see the Flyin’ J Truck Stop on your left. Your fellow
adventurers will be in the parking lot.
